Working behind the scenes here at Potosi School District is the FUN committee. Every Wednesday the regular staff meets to discuss important student matters and how to improve learning here at Potosi Schools. However, on rare occasions this committee focuses on exactly what you might think, having fun. Superintendent Kurt Cohen and a select few other staff come up with ideas, like a recent outing for staff at Hickory Hill Park to play disc golf, because it works on team building and generally is fun.

Trevor Bohn, a middle school English teacher at Potosi school, says, “It’s nice to have an input on what we're doing.” The committee of five rarely meets, usually communicating through emails to share ideas and plan new events.

Potosi’s 5th-grade teacher, Melissa Flanagan, says, “I’ve wanted to be involved in something to join a leadership role, but nothing stuck out to me as something I would be good at or would enjoy doing as much as FUN has been.”

“All staff members feel like they have a voice on the committee,” says Cohen. “Education is probably the most rewarding profession, and at the same time one of the most stressful positions for a teacher. Everyone on our staff is a teacher, from lunch ladies to our office staff. We ask a whole lot of our teachers.”

Something that community members may be unaware of is how much FUN has already impacted the school, this being its first year in operation. The committee organized and designed the Welcome Back to School video showcasing the ‘lineups’ of all teachers and staff. They also worked to put together our school’s 12 Days of Christmas Dress Ups.

Some upcoming plans for FUN are secretive because staff most likely will have a better reaction to random moments of fun instead of planning around it, but be on the lookout for how this committee is continuing to help the district and community have more “fun” in teaching and learning. However, these times are rare occasions because almost every week staff works after school Wednesdays to plan lessons and have district-wide meetings to provide our students with an amazing education.
