The 2022-23 boys' basketball season is underway. This team is coming off of a regional championship in the 21-22 season leaving them with high hopes and big shoes to fill. I wanted to get a preview of the season, so I sat down with Potosi’s “Triple Threat”, Sam Udelhofen.

I asked him what he believes the key to winning this season is, and he said, “Building team chemistry is going to be key. Without last year’s five seniors, we have to rely on our underclassmen to play a big role.”

To build that chemistry, Coach Uppena is sure to depend on this year’s four dedicated seniors: Sam Udelhofen, Dayton Udelhofen, Ben Spriggs, and Logan Kruser. They bring a lot of leadership experience, and they have what it takes to win on a big stage.

Gavin Wunderlin will also play a big role this year. He’ll be sure to put on a show too. Sam predicts Wunderlin will average one dunk a game. While a slam dunk in a high school game is fun to see, Gavin brings much more to the table, especially his basketball IQ. As a junior, he’ll definitely play a leadership role.

Ezra Groom is another junior who will bring down a lot of rebounds and excel in the post. There are a few sophomores expected to play a role too. Dawson Weber and Aidan Uppena earned starting spots in game one. Isaiah Groom and Oliver Post will split time between JV and varsity throughout the year, helping both teams find success.

“My number one goal for this season is to win the conference championship,” said Sam. The Six Rivers Conference is filled with tough competition. “I’m looking forward to playing River Ridge and my favorite opponent, Brayden Crubel.” Fans will also enjoy watching the match-up between Potosi and Cassville. It’s entertaining to see how close teammates on the football and baseball field become competitive rivals on the basketball court. That game is never absent of some good-natured trash talk.

Sam emphasized that the seniors have complete trust in Coach Uppena to get them where they need to be. He said, “Coach Uppena knows his stuff, and he keeps his cool in pressure situations.” The assistant coaches know the players well too. There is a strong relationship between all the coaches and players. The trust is there.

Sam went on to say, “The pieces are in place. Now we have to capitalize on the court. I know our fans are going to help us do just that!”
