Levi, Ezra, and Isiah Groom are siblings at Potosi High school. They have three older siblings who have graduated from Potosi high school, Noah, Ethan, and Chloe Groom. All of them at some point were homeschooled. I talked to Levi, who is a senior this year, about his experience transitioning from at-home learning to face-to-face public school learning.

Levi said he went to a private school in North Carolina until he was in the fourth grade. His family moved to Wisconsin because they had family here, and they continued their education as homeschooled students. Once they reached freshman year, they went to a public school because it gave them an opportunity to make more friends and to play sports for the school.

Levi liked being at home and learning because he was able to wake up when he wanted to and learn and work at his own pace. Levi was homeschooled until he became a freshman and began school at the public high school. Levi likes being at the public school because he gets the opportunity to play sports and be with his friends. Levi is a three-sport athlete. He was the quarterback of the football team. He also plays basketball and baseball. Levi already had a few friends from the school, so he wasn’t nervous about making any new friends.

I asked Levi why his family chose homeschool over a private school and he said, “There are not a lot of private schools here and my family isn’t Catholic, so we weren’t going to go to the Catholic school.” Levi also told me that the only way to play sports in high school was to go to public high school. Levi is glad that he was able to go to a public school for his last four years of schooling because it gave him the opportunity to make memories playing sports. Levi is also glad that he got to attend a face to face high school so that it can prepare him for college. Levi will be attending the University of Platteville for Engineering.
