College wasn't even over yet for Kylie Reuter when she was offered an open position at Potosi School District in the elementary school, in second grade. She was excited for this opportunity to be able to unexpectedly come back to Potosi so soon.
After teaching for the first time in the middle of last school year, Kylie is now a full-time teacher in third grade with the Potosi School District. This is the first year teaching for Kylie, and she is continuing to grow and learn while working alongside Millie Uppena, the other third-grade teacher. Millie Uppena has already had a major impact on Kylie and her future.
When she started her senior year of high school, Kylie was unsure what she wanted to do with her future. She had experienced that feeling of being pressured to figure out what to do after high school. It was starting to sink in that she wasn’t sure yet what she wanted to do.
Kylie explained, “I was helping Millie Uppena, being a student helper.” She described how she loved the atmosphere and seeing all of the students' faces light up when she walked through the classroom door. The more time she spent in Mrs Uppena’s classroom, the more she knew she wanted to be an elementary teacher.
In elementary school, Reuter attended the Saint Andrews Catholic School. She transferred to Potosi School District in the fifth grade. This was a change for Kylie, but she was excited as she got to play sports, especially volleyball. She also wouldn't be the only girl in her class anymore.
As Kylie finished senior year, she had left a major impact on Potosi. She was in volleyball, basketball, and softball for all four years of high school. During her volleyball career , Kylie received the Six Rivers Conference Player of the Year Award in 2021. She also participated in SADD, Environmental Club, FBLA, FFA, Art Club, and Spanish Club. She was a strong athlete who has helped many players now, including myself.
Deb Hutchcroft, who has been a social studies teacher in Potosi for 28 years, describes Kylie as “A kind and generous student.” Hutchcroft adds, “She was always smiling, happy, and overall a positive person.” She was a good student academically and as a person. Coming up with a senior quote once graduation gets closer can take a bit of time, but for Kylie her senior quote matched perfectly for her as a student and a future teacher. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart” Colossians 3:23.
Kylie's plan was to make her way back to Potosi, but she didn't expect it to be so soon. Kylie explains, “Becoming a coach helped get my foot in the door.” She adds, “This helps them make a good decision inviting me to the district, knowing my character traits.” The position as a coach helped Kylie become part of the teaching staff. She now has the opportunity to teach children and help them grow, just like she had here in Potosi as a student.
