Track season has officially started, and there are 40 students total from Potosi and Cassville who make up the current team. The team is coming off a great season last year and has many returning athletes. Coach Jason Edge said, “The boys finished in the top three of the conference, and the girls finished in the top half as well. Some of the returning athletes are Aaron Edge, Hunter White, Brielle Fishnick, Grace Laufenberg, Iris Adams, Drew Richardson, and Connor Robbins.”
There are 18 events, including running, throwing, and jumping. All of these events add up to get the team’s total score. Team scoring is done by awarding points for each of the top eight positions of each event in large meets. In small meets, scoring is done differently.
Athletes can participate in a variety of events, and multiple athletes can sometimes participate in the same event, depending on the meet. Coach Edge says, “Generally, we are allowed two or three individuals per event and one entry for relays per event. Some meets you can have unlimited entries.”
Coach Edge stated they have many strengths coming into the year. “We have a lot of experienced athletes back [who] scored well for us last year. We also have some newcomers who will have success this year for us.” When it comes to weaknesses, he said, “The only thing that comes to mind is just the general conditioning and getting into a comfortable state.”
Track is something students should be involved in. Track provides students with an opportunity to get better physically and mentally. Coach Edge says, “Everyone plays a key role in the team's success. It also allows students an opportunity to meet a lot of different athletes in one setting. The athletes cheer for one another, no matter what school they go to, as long as they are not in the same event.”
In the last meet at Cassville on April 16, the boys finished in third place, and the girls finished in first place.
