Even though phones and social media are taking up much of students’ time, card games are starting to come back around at school. Instead of playing on their phones during their free time, more students are choosing to play games like cribbage and euchre during their free time together in their study halls, but only after their assignments have been completed. This has started to change the atmosphere in a good way.
Alex Frederick thinks one of the main reasons card games are becoming popular again is because they’re easy for anyone to learn and join. There are a lot of different games to learn, so it doesn’t get boring, and people can usually find something they like. He also mentioned that card games can actually be good for your brain. Even though he knows school should always come first, Frederick says he feels like, “Playing cards is a better way to spend free time than just scrolling on a phone.” He also thinks “More people should at least try to learn, since it can help them meet new people.”
Damian Bauer has also noticed that students don’t want to be on their phones as much as they used to. He thinks that “People are just looking for more real conversations with their friends.” Playing cards and talking with others can also help build communication skills that will be useful later in life, like when working with coworkers, even though euchre is his favorite game.
Kolton Vogelsberg says the social side of card games is a big reason why they matter. He says, “It gives students a chance to talk, be a little competitive, and take a break from schoolwork.” He thinks it helps create a more friendly environment around school. Vogelsberg also said, “It can also bring together people who don’t usually hang out, which gives students a chance to meet new people.”
Overall, card games seem to be doing more than just helping students pass their spare time. They’re giving people a reason to talk and laugh with their peers, and take a break from their screens, which honestly feels like a step in the right direction. This will help the future of our students who have completed their work to develop social skills and grow into the world to be better communicators.
