Mr. Morley says, “When I was younger, I didn’t enjoy school.” That all changed when he joined the band. His music teachers inspired him and made school something he actually looked forward to. Because of them, he decided to become a teacher too. He wanted to be someone who could guide and support students like a coach.
After graduating from Cuba City High School, he attended the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire. Morley said, “I chose Eau Claire because it had a strong music program, it was a beautiful campus, and it was far from home.” There, he learned how to become both a better musician and a better teacher.
After graduating from college in December 2022, he worked as a substitute teacher while living at home and traveling for interviews. “I didn’t expect to end up back in this area, but choosing Potosi was a great fit.” Since Mr. Morley grew up in a similar area, he feels like he can really relate to his students.
He has been working at Potosi for three years. “One of my favorite parts of teaching at Potosi is working with all grade levels,” Mr. Morley explained. He directs the high school and middle school bands. Besides the band, he also teaches elementary classes. He enjoys watching students grow over time, both as musicians and as people. “That makes my job feel extra special,” he said. Mr. Morley’s goal is to keep the band program growing. “I want more students to join, more music to be played, and for the band to travel and perform for people who might not come to concerts,” he said.
There are also some fun facts students might not know about Mr. Morley. He has a twin brother. He loves going on hikes and walks, and he tries to get 10,000 steps every day. He is also a big film fan and enjoys watching movies.
Even though he didn’t always love school, the band helped him find his place. Now, he’s helping his students do the same every day.
