Every summer, some of Wisconsin’s best graduating high school football players come together for one final game. The 2026 WIFCA All-Star Game gives athletes the chance to compete alongside former rivals, represent their region, and celebrate the hard work they put into their high school careers. For many players, the opportunity is something they never expected.
Alex Friederick, one of the athletes from our school selected for this year’s game, said the opportunity means even more because he battled through injury during the season. “I am definitely excited about going.” Because he did not play from Week 8 through the end of the season, he admitted the call came as a surprise. “After I got injured, I never expected to get the chance to play in the All-Star game. I’m very excited to play again.” Despite missing a portion of the season, Alex still earned a selection to the game. He also added, “But I’m really grateful for the opportunity.” As he prepares for the game, Alex said he is focusing on the mental side of football. “I’m just trying to make sure I’m mentally prepared.”
While some players were surprised by the selection, others felt confident after strong seasons. Carter Bierman said he is thrilled to take part in the event and compete with some of the best players in the state. “I am very excited about going to the All-Star game this year.” Unlike some athletes, Bierman said he was not overly surprised when he received the invitation. “Not really, but I was very excited. ” To prepare for the game, Bierman has stayed focused in the weight room. “I’ve been staying in shape and lifting hard to get stronger.”
Another player heading to the All-Star game is me, William Tobin. I earned All-State honors during the season. Because of that recognition, I knew my spot in the game was already solidified. I was named All-State, so I knew that I would automatically be selected. Still, that did not make the moment any less exciting. Yes, I am very excited and blessed. I can’t wait to compete against all the best players in the small school divisions. I have been preparing intensely for the opportunity. Along with this, I have been lifting every day and making sure I stay in a good headspace.
Behind the scenes, coaches are also preparing to make the game a great experience for the athletes. Andrew Troxel of Richland Center is involved in organizing and coaching in the game. He said the event is special because it brings together talented players from across Wisconsin. “I’m definitely excited, opportunities like this don’t come around very often, and it’s an honor to represent the south and work with such a talented group of players and coaches.” While he isn’t nervous, Troxel explained that there is a responsibility that comes with helping lead the team. “You want to make sure the players have a great experience and that we put a team on the field that competes the right way.”
Preparation for the game takes organization and teamwork among coaches. “A lot of it is communication and organization,” Troxel added. “We’re coordinating with the coaching staff to make sure everything is structured so the players can perform at their best.” Troxel also believes the All-Star game highlights how strong high school football is in the southwestern part of the state.
Players who participated in previous All-Star games say the experience is unforgettable. Former participant Owen Vogelsberg, Potosi class of 2022, said the memories from the week leading up to the game, stand out the most. “The most memorable moments were meeting all the guys and going through the whole process of the week together.” The opportunity allowed him to meet players from other schools and build friendships through football. “I enjoyed my experience a lot and would do it again.”
For this year's athletes, the 2026 WIFCA All-Star Game represents more than just another football game. It is the final chapter of their high school football careers and a celebration of everything they accomplished on the field. With players like Alex Friederick, Carter Bierman, and Will Tobin preparing to compete, the game will, in turn, bring together determination, talent, and pride from across the state. For many of these players, it will be one last chance to put on the pads, step onto the field, and play the sport they love.
