Did you know that dual credit enrollment programs have been available to high school students for nearly seventy years? Potosi High School began offering dual-enrollment classes for its high school students in 2014. Out of 53 juniors and seniors, 25 of whom take at least two Southwest Tech dual-unrollment classes. These courses offer more rigorous coursework intended for college students, but they are offered to high school students. Originally, dual enrollment classes were intended only for high school seniors to prevent a well-known case of senioritis. Over time, it has broadened to juniors, sophomores, and even freshmen. Potosi High School and Middle School counselor Sara Davis claims, “Dual enrollment classes are spreading nationwide, and it’s noted that every school district in the state of Wisconsin actively participates in dual credit programs that are established with their closest CESA outlet.” It is now state-mandated that every school offer dual credit enrollment classes to students.
Dual Credit Enrollment classes may seem complex, but in reality, they are opportunities students should take advantage of. Davis adds, “Dual credit enrollment is an opportunity for students to take advantage of college credits through their local higher institutions. Students need to complete the proper paperwork, get board approval, and once the student completes each course, they not only receive a high school credit, but they earn and establish college credit and have a college transcript.” School districts have special designated funding for payment of dual credit enrollment courses. However, if a student fails a college course, they must pay for it themselves.
Fortunately, most colleges will accept these dual enrollment credits; it is strongly suggested that students ensure their credits will be transferred to the college of their choice. Some majors and programs are specific about what they will and will not accept. Students need to focus on their future; strengthening their education will help secure a career that fits them best. Davis suggests, “Do your research on what you are planning to do after high school, and see what required classes are needed for your college of interest. Make sure to check what classes you can take for general education through the dual credit program. This information is located on college and university websites. Students just need to look under ‘Academics’ or ‘Programs’ for what specific classes they are required to take.” Get a head start on your education through these amazing classes. Southwest Tech provides a variety of classes, including English Composition 1, Intro to Psychology, Intro to Diversity, Speech, and Statistics. There is a class for everyone!
