High schools don’t always get as lucky as Potosi with their student teachers. Amber Meier student-taught with Mrs. Brunton before returning to Potosi as a full-time teacher. Another student teacher is currently making an impact in Potosi beyond the classroom. From playing college basketball to being a student teacher, Brianna Prieve, currently a student teacher with Mr. Edge at Potosi High School, does it all.

Prieve isn’t a stranger at Potosi. She has been helping coach PC girls' basketball for the past couple of years. “Jamie Nebel was an old coach for my AAU program, and she called asking if I could help coach. I couldn’t help full-time because I was playing basketball at UW-P at the time.”

Jamie Nebel took over the head coaching position at PC at the start of the 2024 season. “I tried to help whenever I could and had the time to,” Prieve said. She helped coach the summer program for PC girls basketball the past two summers. She now helps Jamie coach during the season as an assistant coach for the team, starting this year.

Prieve got lucky with the school she was placed in as a student teacher. “We had to put our top three preferences, and then they reached out to your top choice; obviously, mine was Potosi.” She teaches pre-K through 12th grade physical education with Mr. Edge, and 9th and 10th grade health with Mr. Seigert.

Prieve is originally from Randolph, Wisconsin, where she attended high school about two hours away from the Potosi area. She originally enrolled at UW-Stout, but transferred to UW-Platteville. “I transferred from Stout because I was a little far from home, so I chose UW-P because it was a little closer to home and I was still able to play basketball.” She majored in physical education.

“I changed my major three times.” She started in psychology, then she changed it to health promotion. “I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with health promotion, but from running camps and being around kids, I realized I liked sports and helping kids a lot more.”

She found out UW-P had a physical education degree. “When I found that out, I was like ‘oh, perfect!’ Sports, teaching, and I automatically get a minor in coaching as well.” Prieve is happy with her decision. She will graduate from college on December 14, 2025.

Prieve plans on helping with coaching for a while after she graduates from UW-P. She doesn’t plan on taking any head coaching positions. “I thought I always wanted to be a head coach, but now I am not really sure. I kind of like just helping out and not taking care of the big responsibilities.” Prieve plans on staying around the area and potentially helping coach the PC girls softball team as well as the basketball team. She plans on subbing in our school district as well during the spring semester.
