Coach Siegert with players at state championship 2024

The Road Back To State

“Tough.” That’s the one word Coach Siegert uses to describe his 2025 Potosi-Cassville varsity football team. “This year’s team is both mentally and physically tough,” he said proudly.

Coach Siegert is no stranger to success. With 33 years of coaching experience—27 of those as Potosi’s head varsity coach—he has built a program defined by discipline and resilience. His career record includes 198 wins, 21 playoff appearances, and two state tournament runs.

To maintain that level of excellence, Siegert begins his preparation long before the first kickoff. “I make sure the leaders are doing their job, figure out personnel, hold coaching meetings, attend clinics, and talk to a retired Hall of Fame coach,” he explained.

Leadership is a key focus for Siegert, who challenges his upperclassmen to set the tone both on and off the field. “I make sure the team treats every season like it’s their last. Don’t think about next year—show up ready to compete alongside the seniors,” he said.

The PC team has followed that mindset all season, earning an impressive 8–1 record as they headed into the playoffs. “The goal is just to get the next game,” Siegert said. “Trust the process and know that how we do things will get us where we need to go.”

Keeping players motivated and healthy throughout the season is always a challenge. “Motivation is up to the players—they have to want it,” Siegert noted. Practices are a careful balance between having enough contact to learn and improve, but not so much that it risks injuries.”

Siegert’s weekly formula has been refined over decades of coaching experience. “We emphasize film one day, then offense the next, and defense after that. That’s the finishing touch,” he said.

When it comes to opponents, Siegert refuses to overlook anyone. “The next game is always the toughest,” he emphasized. “Never look past anyone.” That mindset keeps his players grounded and focused on one challenge at a time.

This season hasn’t been without its tests. “Our depth is being challenged, and the injury bug means the next guy up has to be ready,” Siegert shared. Despite those hurdles, team chemistry remains one of their greatest strengths. “The chemistry is outstanding,” he said. “Every year, the group is different, but everyone wants to replicate the success of the year before. This team does a great job staying focused on one game at a time and believing in the process.”

The Potosi-Cassville football team will take on Kenosha-St. Joe's this Friday night at Stoughton High School in the State Semi-Finals of the playoffs. A win would earn them a return trip to the state championship game.
