Most people think that the scout team is just for the players who are not good enough to start every Friday night. In reality, it is for the players who show up every day, not for the glory, but for the good of the team. These players could just show up to practice to go through the motions and just not try, but these guys come in to work every day and it shows when the team performs on gamedays.

The football scout team players are the ones who might not have a starting spot but are still great athletes. They show up to try to imitate the opposing team that the football team would play that specific week, this means that these players have to learn a different offense and defense every week which can be a very hard task.

The scout team is definitely not for the weak. “Every day you have to show up ready to put the work in,” said Connor Emler. There are many struggles that the scout team players go through each day; for instance, Emler said some days, usually after a tough game or bad performance, the starters will be frustrated and try to take it out on the scout team, but that is just part of the job.

Carter saw the scout team as an opportunity to make the team better, and he saw it as a shot to get some playing time. “I was always trying my best to make plays to show coaches what I can do,” said Carter. The work Carter did in practice did not go unseen as he ended up getting some playing time on the defensive line in the state championship game.

The Potosi/Cassville football team went on to win their first 13 games and lost their only game of the season in the state championship game. “They were definitely a huge reason for the success this team had,” said senior Ryan Stoney. Ryan also told me that some days it seemed like these scout players could start on some of the other teams we played against this year. That shows the quality of the athletes we have on this team and how everybody does their part to improve the team.
