Tanner Pluemer graduated from Potosi High School last year. Tanner decided to take an AP Environmental Science course his senior year and earned a 5 on the AP exam. Tanner Pluemer’s success in passing the AP Environmental Science exam is a testament to his dedication and strategic preparation while he was in other extracurricular activities such as the Environmental Club, FFA, and football.
The exam, known for its challenging format, includes 80 multiple-choice questions and three free-response questions, testing students’ understanding of environmental concepts and problem-solving skills. Tanner utilized in-class assignments and tests, which helped identify areas of weakness. Tanner accessed many AP videos and assignments throughout the course, which provided structured learning opportunities and improved time management skills.
Tanner explained his thoughts on the AP Environmental Science course: “I thought that the AP Environmental Science course was going to be harder.” Tanner was up for the challenge and knew that he had what it would take to earn a 5 on the exam. Tanner used many resources when preparing for the exam. “I thought Mr. Eastlick’s note packets were the most helpful study [materials] because they are very organized and give you plenty of information,” Tanner said.
The free-response section required Tanner to analyze an environmental problem and propose a solution. “I felt that the free-response section was easier for me because I understood the questions very well and created strong and accurate responses.
The exam is made up of a wide range of topics, from geology to environmental studies. He explained the hardest unit for him to master: “I thought that learning about tectonic plates was difficult, so I did extra practice on that unit.” Regular practice with both multiple-choice and free-response questions is essential to passing the test, said Tanner. Making full use of the available resources, such as AP Classroom and practice tests, enhances your preparation for the exam. “I would always identify and focus on my weaker topics through study routines. I did not think that there was a lot of extra work as the pace of the class seemed just right.”
Tanner is now attending UW-Platteville and majoring in Environmental Science and Conservation. “This class helped me tremendously as I am taking a Plant Earth class that has some similar information in it.”
