Every year Potosi High School does a charity event called Adopt a Family; this program is sponsored by SADD. “The members of SADD make ornaments, and then the community takes the ornaments and they go and buy what is assigned, and they wrap it and put it back underneath the tree. Then we deliver them to that family for the holidays,” stated Mr. Fry, advisor of the SADD club. SADD not only does Adopt a Family, but they also organize blood drives and set up a speaker around prom to talk about distracted driving. SADD stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions.

Around Thanksgiving, Grant County accepts applications from families who request extra help during the holidays. After they pick their families, Grant County assigns a family to the SADD club. “We usually get the names in November, usually before Thanksgiving, so we have about a month, and we try to deliver the items around the middle of December, before Christmas break,” explained Fry.

In 2017 Mr. Fry started as the new high school English teacher and took over the role of advising the SADD club. “It was something SADD was already doing when I got here and I became an advisor of SADD. Iit was a program I picked up that I’m just trying to do the best I can do with it.” He is doing very well with this program because in the upcoming 2020-21 school year, Potosi will be adopting not only one family, but two separate families. “We've been able to get so many items for the family that we adopted, that it’s almost too much. I emailed my contact from Grant County and said we had really good success with the community donating things, so we are going to ask them to assign us two separate families. We can easily provide enough help to support two families. That's a huge success we should celebrate.”

This event helps bring the community together as a whole to help a family (or two) in need. It will be exciting to see the progress that SADD will be making next school year with two families.
