Mrs. Amy Siegert, the middle school English teacher here at Potosi School District, has wanted to start a book club for a while now. She wants to involve not just the people in our school, but the people in our community like parents and any other people in the community that might want to join this book club.
To get this book club started she has talked to many teachers about it, including the other English teachers in the building, Mr. Jason Fry and Mr. Trevor Bohn. They both thought it was a good idea. Mrs. Siegert stated, “Often you see students who aren’t reading for pleasure, they are [only] reading for a class.” She wants to instill more of a love for reading and also build ties with our community.
The whole reason Mrs. Siegert wants to start this book club to build the community and build a love for reading books. She wants the community to be involved by having a caring conversation with a student or students about a book they all have read. The plan is that teachers would pick books that the kids would like and that it would be something for people to do during study hall because most often sometimes she sees students in study hall just sitting doing nothing, and it would be something for people to do during study hall when they have no homework. This would be a great way for the students to engage in a good book.
Every student in grades 6-12 can have a caring conversation with at least one staff member and one community member and talk about a book that they all read. Mrs. Siegert is hoping to start this book club next year and she would love to do it during winter if the administration approves and supports this project. Mrs.Siegert wanted to start it this year during February and March, but it was too late of a notice to raise money for multiple copies of books and get it going, and that is completely understandable because there are a lot of other things the staff has to worry about. Let's hope that we can get this book club going next year. If any students or community members are interested in participating in this book club reach out to the school and maybe we can hope to get something started.
