Meet Mr. Serres, the new substitute teacher at Potosi High School. During his recent time subbing at Potosi, he has taken a keen interest in supporting the track team. With a background in health and physical education, Mr. Serres spent the majority of his teaching career at Platteville High School, following one year at a school in Minnesota.
Mr. Serres has had a lifelong passion for fitness, which seems to come naturally to him. When asked about how he first got into fitness, he shared that growing up in a small town, he spent a lot of time running around the hills. In PE class, he found he excelled and started to get into sports. This passion led him to join track in high school at LaCrescent Minnesota, where he discovered he was quite fast. Mr. Serres describes this talent as a gift. While in college at Luther in Decorah Iowa, he continued to pursue track and realized he wanted to become a health and PE teacher. Mr. Serres went on to become a coach and has been dedicated to it ever since.
The experience of teaching in Minnesota couldn't be more different from that of teaching in the quaint town of Potosi. Having grown up in a community of only 400 people, he later attended a larger high school before pursuing a teaching career. While he has retired from teaching, he plans to stay involved in coaching track and field at Potosi.
He has primarily coached middle-distance, distance runners, and the pole vault throughout his career, but he has dabbled in various coaching areas. Although he has not yet determined what he will be coaching, he is willing to go wherever the track team needs the most help. Due to the small size of the track and field program at Cassville and Potosi in recent years, the coaches plan to divide the team into smaller groups, such as having the throwers focus on one skill while the sprinters work on another.
Mr. Serres expressed his excitement about working with Mr. Siegert, stating that he had previously taught Mr. Siegert's brothers while they were attending Platteville High School. Mr. Serres also mentioned that he was familiar with Mr. Siegert's family, making his transition to working at the school even more enjoyable. Mr. Siegert is the athletic director, so he and Mr. Serres will not be working directly together on track. Nonetheless, Mr. Serres looks forward to being around Mr. Siegert and anticipates a positive experience.
At present, Mr. Serres has no intention of coaching any sport other than his current one; however, should the opportunity arise, he may reconsider. It would be intriguing to witness Mr. Serres coaching a variety of sports, as he has previously coached basketball and dabbled in wrestling.
I've heard many great things about Mr. Serres, and he believes he can make a positive impact on Potosi High School. He mentioned that staying positive is key, as negativity can derail progress. It's important to always aim for excellence and maintain a positive outlook.
