Leadership and having good character are skills that everyone possesses and has the potential to develop, but very few actually utilize the skill to the fullest. Leadership or good character isn’t on a resume, but it is what employers look for the most. These qualities aren’t just for getting hired either. Here at Potosi High School, we have a specialized class during power hour that teaches you the positive outcomes of utilizing the skills of leadership and good character.

From Tuesday to Thursday, we have an enrichment period which is called Power Hour. During this hour, we are given an extra opportunity to prepare for upcoming events. Juniors and sophomores could be preparing for the ACT, or seniors could be exploring careers that spark their interest during this hour. Every quarter, we switch up the enrichment classes that everyone is in to get a wide variety of classes to experience. Freshmen through senior year, you will go through four quarters worth of leadership class.

Leadership class is taught by Mr. Downs, Mr. Siegert, and newly inducted Mr. Eastlick. They teach you about past experiences using stories that they have heard from others about leadership. Watching a motivational video that inspires you to do your best at everything you do, going on a field trip to listen to a speaker, or just a short story: everything has a lesson that you can learn from.  One important topic that Mr. Downs taught about was first impressions. Great eye contact, confidence, and especially a nice, firm handshake was essential to making a great first impression.

After experiencing this class for all of his high school career, senior Ryan Kruser has nothing but nice words to say about this class. “I am very glad that I got to experience the leadership class and learn how to become a more successful leader. I applied these traits that we learned to athletics, and I can really see the positive outcome. Thank you, Mr. Downs, Mr. Siegert, and Mr. Eastlick for teaching me how to use these valuable traits.”

It is a very important class for helping develop students who need a change in character or who want to refine their leadership abilities.
